VIMAR's story goes all the way back to 1945 and today the pioneering Italian electrical brand continues to be at the forefront of smart building systems for home, office and beyond.

VIMAR was founded in Marostica, northern Italy, at the end of the second world war. As pioneering now in the world of electricals as it was then, its HQ is still found in this small Veneto town

Here’s something you may never have pondered, though it impacts our every day. Who invented those little trips that shut automatically when a plug is extracted, thereby giving us the socket safety system that we now take for granted? Who was it that saved us from the very real risk of being fried alive if we mix too intimately with a socket when connecting devices to a live power supply?

The answer is VIMAR. Today, an international giant known for its high tech smart home hardware and connected systems, VIMAR began life in the northern Italian town of Marostica, inventing and designing for the relatively new convenience of electricity wired into homes.

Though it now enjoys platforms around the world, VIMAR preserves its made-in-Italy stamp of quality by manufacturing in its original home of Marostica, using the highly-skilled local labour force

Game-changing innovation

Emerging at the tail of the Second World War in 1945, the new business first manufactured lamp holders, then plugs, wall sockets and iron plugs in a former hat factory. Its first hero product was the pear switch and subsequently glass and porcelain sockets, until the development of thermoplastics in the 1960s and the game-changing invention of the aforementioned Sicury shutter in 1968.

From early socket design, featuring a glass disc with a ground edge, to state-of-the-art smart home interfaces, VIMAR has continuously innovated in the field of home electrics over its lifetime

A leader in smart systems

When electrical appliances started to be automated in the new millennium, VIMAR was there at the forefront of this new connectivity and has continued to innovate and update its technology making it a leader in smart systems for offices, hospitality venues and homes. Most recently it has pushed industry boundaries by introducing customer customisation, not only on the operational side but with the all-important architectural integration of sockets and switches into the fabric of a building.

Firmly of the belief that there is no growth without innovation, but no identity without tradition, VIMAR is an exemplar of the Italian design business model, thriving today by building on its considerable heritage while innovating for future life.
