The new bronze age: GIRA

When you visit designers and architects in their homes or studios, it’s always exciting to see their front door. How did they approach the design of this important site of first impression? In front of Berlin architect Jürgen Mayer H’s office, for example, a classic door knocker welcomes visitors. And in front of Dieter Rams' house in Kronberg, it looks just as tidy and functional as one would expect from a designer whose motto is ‘less but better’.

Reduction and quality are two traits which also characterise Gira’s System 106: In addition to the clear, timeless design, it is above all the modularity of this door communication system that immediately catches the eye. Each individual element is designed as a square and can therefore be expanded both horizontally and vertically, or four modules can be combined to form a square, for example. The flexible layout of the system allows users to react to very different spatial conditions.

At the same time, it is just as important to be able to create an aesthetically harmonious overall picture through colour and surface combinations that match the respective architecture. And it is precisely here – in addition to its functional performance – where System 106 offers great creative freedom. In addition to the existing stainless steel, aluminium and white versions, two new options will be available from October 2020, namely matt black (aluminium) and bronze (PVD).

The Physical Vapour Deposition (PVD) finishing process makes bronze particularly robust while giving it a lasting elegance and from October, a bronze shade will also be available for the Esprit series, for example. The new, warm bronze shades and their subtly shimmering surfaces are a reaction to current living trends and offer designers even more flexibility for realising their projects – more but better.
