Terraces are aspirational spaces. In cities, within a residential context, they denote a certain degree of privilege and exclusivity. At hotels and restaurants, they are the most coveted of socialising spaces. (Weather permitting.) Everyone wants a bit of the great outdoors. But not completely. The terrace is, ultimately, an architecturally liminal space: outside, yet almost inside. Near nature, but not in it. Yes, you can have it all!

In their design for Garden Hotpot Restaurant, MUDA-Architects bring guests closer into the surrounding nature by eliminating walls. Instead, the snaking structure is supported by a series of steel columns that seem to disappear into the eucalyptus tree trunks.

For the design of Oasis Terraces, Serie Architects utilise a series of lush garden terraces that slope towards the waterway and serve as communal spaces, children’s playgrounds and a natural amphitheatre. Overlooking the communal gardens are platforms with rooms and outdoor areas for communal dining, restaurants, education centres, and polyclinic services.

Alcazár de Toledo enjoys a privileged location with extraordinary panoramic views of Mexico City, which Sordo Madaleno Arquitectos sought to exploit with their architectural concept. Based on a linear element which folds itself over the rugged topography in a right-angled zig-zag shape, each fold responds to and fulfils the various needs of the luxury residential complex.

For Solaz Los Cabos, Sordo Madaleno Arquitectos used wave-like organic forms to produce the structures various volumes with three large, east-west running curved terraces. Each terrace rises above the other in stepped fashion with south-facing facades so every space enjoys spectacular sea views.

Villa Mosca Bianca

Design Haus Liberty

Design Haus Liberty worked with local architect Roberto Manzetti on Villa Mosca Bianca, situated on the shore of Lago Maggiore. A terraced landscape was carefully carved out to open up the house to the lake and allow for 180-degree-view of the surrounding mountains.
