Leolux: immersed in the rhythms of Milan

In collaboration with a variety of creative forces, Leolux will present a multi-sensory immersive installation called Rhythms during Milan Design Week, featuring pulsating volumes, a breathing ceiling – and don't forget the Dutch waffles!

Leolux has booked its spot in one of the hottest locations on the Milan Design Week map. Its immersive installation, Rhythms, will appear in Alcova, the itinerant exhibition platform founded by Joseph Grima (of Space Caviar) and Valentina Ciuffi (of Studio Vedèt) in 2018, who have made it their mission to show off fresh design adventures in beautifully storied, neglected industrial or institutional spaces – often just before they transform with renovated glory into a new quarter. This year, it’s the former municipal abattoir situated in Porta Vittoria that will become a hub of new and experimental design.

×Rhythms is a multi-sensorial installation which slots nicely into Alcova’s spirit of craft and innovation, and this year’s focus on what the founders describe as ‘the often neglected fields of sensory design’. Against the olfactory backdrop of baking Stroopwafels (the signature Dutch sweet treat will be hand-made on-site and offered to all comers) creative engineer Daniël de Bruin will activate the set with textile volumes that rise and fall as though respiring, and pull attention to some of Leolux’s prized new pieces.

בTo complement the collection we wanted to create an immersive experience, a breathing ceiling that will visually alter the space while also heightening the sense of smell,’ says Studio Truly Truly. A small collection by Studiopepe – including the Lunetta sofa, a coffee table and rug – will take centerstage, with rippled upholstery and woodgrain contours bringing tactile, textural intrigue to the mix.

×Another chapter in the story will be a cast aluminium stool, BRAM, a stackable sculpture conceived for the occasion by Belgian artist Bram Vanderbeke, an addition to the Leolux Viewpoint collection which celebrates more artistic one-off pursuits. ‘For Leolux, art and creativity is an important part of the brand,’ explains Studio Truly Truly. ‘This is why we have started the Viewpoint collection among other initiatives.’ Known for his ‘pragmatic’ brutalist sculptures, the piece will help draw a line between design, craftsmanship, and functional art, a line that points the way forward for the 90-year-old Dutch brand.
