Biography
Jon Case | The Maker
‘Teaching my sons to work with their hands is the greatest gift I can give them. It teaches you that there is always another way to solve a problem.’
Jon is a devout designer-maker. Having studied interior design at Cape Town’s BHC School of Design, he’s drawn to invention and craft, constantly pushing boundaries to realise new ideas. His home workshop is testament to his continual experimentation with materials, using them in unconventional ways that highlight their innate beauty and integrity.
Jon’s creative approach to problem-solving coupled with his mechanical sensibility to interior architecture are evident in the designs of his diverse projects. Drawing on his love of art, photography, illustration and typography, his process of creation maintains a constantly fresh appeal, an upbeat energy that is carried through into the relationships he nurtures.
A Bauhaus fan, Jon is, at heart, a minimalist, his interiors portraying a soulful essence, with considered details that speak of confidence, honesty, refinement and purpose. Highly cognisant of the integral balance between form and function, his designs stir the senses, evoking an emotional response, while facilitating fluid, effortless interaction.
Mark Rielly | The Dreamer
‘I enjoy feeding my creative side, paging through design magazines, exploring Pinterest, travelling and exploring hotels, resorts, restaurants and galleries.’
For Mark, anything that can be visualised has the potential to be realised. Designing, to him, is the epitome of such dreaming – a profession that allows him to present a uniquely curated vision for every project. As a keen mountain-runner and food-enthusiast, Mark sources daily inspiration from a myriad locales. His extensive personal art collection illustrates his attraction to objects that carry emotive appeal. Such intuition flows into his interior designs, where furnishings maintain an intentional sense of place and deep respect for context.
With an architecture degree from Nelson Mandela University in Port Elizabeth, Mark possesses a big-picture vision of design, his interiors demonstrating a Modernist approach with eclectic influences. Striking details and intricate layering are signatures of his visual language, which, at the same time, maintains a pared-back simplicity. Mark has been a finalist in the internationally acclaimed Andrew Martin Interior Designer of the Year Award for two consecutive years.
Michele Rhoda | The Soul-Seeker
‘I love reading in-depth interviews and watching documentaries about the people behind the work – being inspired by who they are personally, their process and what motivates them.’
Michele’s work leads her to seek order by creating beauty and balance in interior architecture. Holding a National Diploma in Interior Design from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, her foremost mission is to introduce a sense of soul to our surroundings so that the places we interact with elicit emotional responses. By maintaining a sensitivity toward the context, environment and people behind every project she undertakes, she transforms a client’s wish into an experience-built reality, where interiors become meaningful spaces filled with intrinsic connections to material, provenance and process.
When she’s not travelling the globe, injecting settings with expressive allure, Michele is planning her next destination vacation, often while immersed in nature, or browsing through coffee-shop books. Although fashion, architecture and art remain her big inspirations, it’s the human connection with friends and family that makes her happiest, a quality she carries through to her daily spirited interactions with clients.
