Kenichi Teramoto and Wael Al Awar
Profile
ibda design is a design-driven architecture studio with a focus towards a project's specific context, and a close attention to detail.
The two partners, Wael Al Awar (Lebanon) and Kenichi Teramoto (Japan), each own unique biographical stories that first led them away from their home countries, then later to collaborate in Dubai. Thus, they share a mutual ability to observe a city up-close and intimately, yet also from afar, with the attentive eye of an "outsider".
With no first-language shared between them, the two are required to communicate through architecture, using design as a language. Upon merging their individual sensibilities of form and natural landscape, they reach an architectural consensus amongst themselves, and the context.
Biography
Kenichi Teramoto
Kenichi Teramoto joined ibda design as Principal Architect and partner to Wael Al Awar in 2012. Prior to joining ibda design, Teramoto worked in both Tokyo and Rotterdam, having significant experience in several different regions, including Asia, Middle East, Africa, and Europe. His experience ranges from furniture to urban design, and his architectural experience ranges from high-rise buildings and residential, to elementary schools, universities, libraries, museums, art centres, and religious sanctuaries. Teramoto's working experiences have trained him to develop an understanding of culture, geography, region, and materials. He utilizes a multi-disciplinary approach to design, addressing the social, environmental, economical, and technological aspects of each project, in order to tailor a highly-specific concept to the given context. Teramoto is always looking to challenge conventional processes, and to push the boundaries of design whenever possible.
Wael Al Awar
Wael Al Awar founded Ibda Design in 2009, after moving back to the Middle East from Tokyo. He spent six years in Tokyo, working with renowned Japanese architects (such as CAt, Arata Isozaki, and SANAA) on various scale projects in Japan and around the world. In 2012, Wael Al Awar was joined by Kenichi Teramoto as a partner. Both Principal Architects had worked closely in Tokyo on several international projects. Wael has extensive experience in designing and managing projects on a local and international level, ranging from university campuses to mixed-use developments to private villas and mosques. Having worked in Barcelona (“the west”), prior to moving to Tokyo (“the far east”), he has developed a strong cultural understanding and geographical sensitivity to different project contexts. Wael has a multi-disciplinary approach to design, addressing the social, environmental, economical and technological aspects of each project in order to tailor a highly specific concept to the given context. He is always looking to challenge conventional processes, and push the boundaries of design whenever possible.
