Profile
Jan Ulmer is a member of the Berlin Chamber of Architects and principal at Jan Ulmer Architects, which he founded in 2007. Jan Ulmer Architects implements projects that range in scale from public buildings in urban contexts to furniture design. The firm has realized several significant stand-alone residential commissions, exhibition designs and building conversions. Current works include a large-scale exhibition in Strasbourg, single family houses in Germany and Switzerland and prefabricated modular housing units (in collaboration with artist Simon Dybbroe Moller).
Jan Ulmer Architects has been honored with several international approved design awards, most recently the 2015 Velux Jury Award. The team won prizes in significant design-build competitions, notably the first prize in the international competition for the 2010 German Pavilion in India. These successes have earned Ulmer invitations to jury well-recognized national competitions.
Since 2014, Jan Ulmer is a visiting professor for graduate studios at Washington University Sain Louis. In 2013 Jan taught exhibition-design at the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design. From 2007- 2011 he was a lecturer and research associate at Leibniz University Hannover working in the Institute for Design and Building Typology. There he developed course curriculum and taught undergraduate/graduate studios, along with degree projects and various seminars.
After graduating with his masters in architecture from the University of the Arts Berlin in 2001, Ulmer worked as a project architect at Kuehn Malvezzi from 2002-2007. There he directed projects such as the Friedrich Flick Collection Berlin and the Julia Stoschek Collection Dusseldorf, which was nominated for the international Mies van der Rohe Award.
