Biography
Jerry van Eyck
founder & principal, !melk
Trained as a landscape architect and industrial designer, Jerry van Eyck approaches each commission balancing both the macro scale (how open and public space fit into the larger context of a city’s fabric and the urban experience) with the micro (materiality, ornamentation, and pattern as expressed through custom furniture, lighting, paving, and other details) that provide each project its own singular identity.
As a former partner of West 8 in the Netherlands, one of his earliest projects was Schouwburgplein (‘Theatre Square’) in Rotterdam, which became globally recognized as an iconic urban landscape. While at West 8, Jerry won many international design competitions and led many projects around the globe, including Chiswick Park in London, Expo.02 - The Swiss National Expo of 2002, One North Park in Singapore, and the design for Jubilee Gardens in London. From 2007-2010, Jerry was the project director for the team that won the international competition for the Governors Island Park and Open Space design, in New York, and he continued to be the design director for this project through its Master Plan stage. Jerry was also responsible for orchestrating the winning design for Soundscape Park in Miami Beach, Florida, a highly recognized and award-winning public space.
After recognizing the unyielding potential of New York as a working base, Jerry decided to establish !melk in the spring of 2010. Within one year of its founding, !melk completed its first project, Brown University’s expansion into the Jewelry District of Providence, RI. Since then, !melk has won numerous noteworthy competitions such as, the Citylife development in Milan, Italy, and the Theme Pavilion Gardens of the 2014 World Horticultural Expo in Qingdao, China, and the design for Hance Park, a 32-acres central urban park in Downtown Phoenix, AZ. Most recently, !melk realized the first phase of one of the most transformative urban landscape projects in the US today: re-envisioning the iconic Las Vegas Strip as a continuous public realm, which includes the first ever park on the Strip. “The Park” opened in April 2016.
Jerry is a globally respected lecturer, and serves as a visiting critic at design institutions, including the University of Pennsylvania PennDesign, The Harvard GSD, The Yale School of Architecture, Columbia University’s GSAPP, and the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. Currently, Jerry is a member of the Board of Governors of the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture, and of the United States General Services Administration’s Nation Register of Peer Professionals.
