Darrel O'Donoghue, David O'Shea
Profile
ODOS Architects was established in 2002 by Darrell O’Donoghue and David O’Shea. With a diverse client base, the practice covers a broad range of scale and function including small domestic works, private single and multiple housing, apartments, bars, restaurants, retail and office fit-outs and religious buildings. The practice is wholly interested in the realisation of contemporary architecture in response to various social and cultural influences. We strongly believe our clients deserve to be challenged, which is why we strive to expose them to the unknown and unfamiliar. The constant questioning of how people work, rest and play in today’s society is the fundamental driving force behind the practice. We aspire to an honesty and transparency in the use, arrangement and detailing of materials, always choosing to avoid the ‘easy cosmetic’ response. This honesty is evident in the arrangement and composition of elements in our work, distilled from a core concept, itself a product of brief and site. We hope to instil a sense of curiosity and excitement, stimulating a response, confronting and challenging traditional conceptions of Architecture. The practice has been exhibited nationally and internationally and has received a number of awards including Winner of the AR International Emerging Architecture Awards 2009, ‘Best House’ at the RIAI Irish Architecture Awards, 2009, two special mentions at the AAI Awards 2010 and 2009, shortlist for the Young Architect of the Year Award 2009, one award and a special mention in the Architectural Association of Ireland Awards 2006/2007, two RIAI Irish Architecture Awards (Exhibition) 2005 and three RIAI Irish Architecture Awards (Exhibition) 2006. Our work has also been published in a number of periodicals and magazines and we have recently won the invited International Design Competition Auf Mont 43. The practice is a registered member of the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland and the Architectural Association of Ireland. David O’Shea is also a third year design studio tutor at the Dublin School of Architecture, and both partners lecture internationally, including at the RIBA in London. ODOS Architects represented IRELAND, as part of a group entry, in the 10th International Architecture Exhibition, Venice Biennale 2006.
