Profile
A partnership should be a meeting of minds, a coming together of vision and ambition. It need not be a fusion of personalities. Which is just as well. Formed in 1956, RMJM was Robert Matthew and Stirrat Johnson-Marshall. Robert so blunt; Stirrat quietly encouraging. One a traditionalist, focused on design and construction, the other immersed in systems and planning. Perhaps it’s just as well that their offices were separated by 500 miles.
What they did share, however, was a belief in humane modernism; architecture as service. With public sector backgrounds – Robert as former Chief Architect to the Scottish Office and later London County Council and Stirrat Chief Architect to the Ministry of Education – it was no surprise that the practice flourished on commissions for schools, universities and hospitals. And it was to be another public commission – albeit from overseas – that would propel the firm to prominence.
