New Rhine promenade in St. Johann, Basel

A formerly enclosed port area to become the city‘s insiders‘ tip
Special curved Landi benches, bench-table-bench combinations

In 2016, after nine years of planning and construction, the Rhine promenade in St. Johann in Basel will finally be completed and opened to the public. The building contractors, Kanton Basel-Stadt and No- vartis Pharma AG, tendered the project in 2007 and eventually awarded the contract to landscape architects Hager Partner AG. Construction was carried out between 2014 and 2016.

The promenade is around six hundred metres in length and is accompanied by a wall that separates two levels of different heights. The upper section, which adjoins the premises of Novartis Pharma AG, is furnished with plants, BURRI benches, points for dwelling, and gravel. The lower level provides exit routes as well as showers for swimmers. The path, wall and benches are all contoured – inspired by the flowing motion of the Rhine. The surroundings have been intentionally decked out in natural colours with the aim of creating a pleasant atmosphere.

For this large project, Hager Partner AG commissioned BURRI public elements AG with ten special curved Landi benches and two bench-table-bench combinations, which blend in perfectly with the ecological context. Planed Douglas fir and galvanised steel frames with micaceous iron ore coating make the benches what they are: modern special editions of the Landi classic from 1939.
