Media vision
The Süddeutscher Verlag moved at the end of 2008 from downtown Munich to its very own publishing house on the eastern outskirts of the city. The L-shaped complex clearly marks the new media site which provides space for 1,800 employees. GKK+Architekten, Prof. Swantje Kühn und Oliver Kühn, from Berlin created a new landmark for the journalists in Munich consisting of an office tower measuring nearly 100 meters in height that in turn is attached to a 25-meter high annex with an atrium. The architectural highlight is the modern glass facade whose panes jut forward at an angle, breaking the light in different ways. The atrium forms a spacious and prestigious connection between the 28-floor tower and 6-floor annex. It provides access to the public areas of the lower floors with cafeteria, restaurant and conference rooms as well as the publishers’ own kindergarten. Whereas passers-by are spellbound by the play of light on the panes outside, an artistic play of colors on the walls of the canteen and restaurant grab your attention within. Open-plan and individual offices for concentration interchange on the upper floors with lounges for communication that provide impressive vistas of Munich and the Alps. The architects placed light furnishings on an elegant gray. Eco by Carpet Concept provides a calming contrast to the media frenzy over about 30,000 square meters. Invista’s Antron Legacy fiber has dirt-repelling characteristics that ensure Eco looks good for so long. The flat-woven carpet is hard-wearing, improves acoustics, is anti-static, stores warmth and thus helps to reduce energy costs.
