Naturmuseum St.Gallen

The building of the Neues Naturmuseum St. Gallen extends the existing disposition of public buildings and facilities of the church St. Maria Neudorf and the Botanical Garden on the eastern edge of St. Gallen's city centre. In dialogue with the sacred presence of the Church of St. Maria and the functional expression of the buildings of the Botanical Garden, the Neues Naturmuseum positions itself as a building with representative character and modern, functional qualities. Due to the urban planning positioning and the stone materialisation, the museum building is perceived as a visual reference and representative point of orientation opposite Rohrschacherstrasse and the church complex. At the same time, it subordinates itself to the silhouette of the church and refers to the functional, reserved language of the buildings of the Botanical Garden with its outwardly visible roof structure. Together with the church and the botanical garden in the Neudorf area, the museum forms an urban ensemble that connects via the common, public outdoor spaces and integrates the heterogeneous urban environment as a matter of course.
