In Munich living space is scarce – re-densification and transformation became a sensible strategy. Owner Uwe Pinhammer, adopted this idea and converted a former motorcycle garage to a small, but special residential loft. For the Architect Marie Aigner was important to transport the original workshop atmosphere to the new residential loft. She managed this task by vigorous materials, clear forms, diminished design and industrially seeming details.
The residential loft is convincing by contrasts, by unexpected and special space solutions. The outside facade of the original workshop was preserved, while the inner life of this rear building was completely cored. An extensive open window-front exposes the loft exclusively from south-east direction. This part lying to the inner courtyard accommodates the kitchen and an open dining and living area. To expose all rooms of the 9-metre-deep loft a subtle lighting concept was developed by the architect. Marie Aigner assembles day light wells and artificial light sources in a way analogical to a stage scenery.
The visual appearance of the space is completely changed with few handholds. Foldable glass partitions are able to separate the two sleeping areas from the big living space. By adding the closed kitchens-sliding elements a neutral space originates in which one can receive guests or business partners, without presenting to private uses.
Highlight of the bespoken interior is the cupboard in the master bedroom. Based on a rail controlled shelve system, the mobile elements are made to stand alone or fit together and assemble as one unit. The diminished design offers place for vigorous materials like the soaped oak-full wooden floor, natural stone for the master bath or the black Linoleum and mirrors for all installation units.
The residential loft is marked by a harmonious effect from light, color and material which is reached with easy means. Lighting effects, the adaptable space solutions and tailor-made pieces of furniture as well as high-quality materials create an atmospheric and very innovative space.
