Founded in 2010, Fast Fashion company, JustFab Inc. experienced exponential growth and sought to develop a headquarters that could honor the company’s unique start-up culture and support their activity based workstyle. The new space needed to celebrate JustFab’s strongly famine high-energy brand, and showcase the business model & process that made them so successful.
Justfab utilizes a combination of production, showroom, office and entertainment functionalities. These components were previously spread throughout the Greater Los Angeles Area. The Director of Design Alexis Dennis’ vision was to bring all the programmatic requirements under one roof to create one high impact, efficient creative community.
The biggest challenge was finding a building that could provide a 3,500 SF column free studio to produce videos in-house. To secure JustFab as the first tenant of a new El Segundo development the landlord agreed to have one of the building columns removed and absorb the cost themselves. Architect and structural engineers developed a concept to transfer the load of two stories and the roof parking deck to new columns and beams. Installing the shallowest structure possible in order to maximize the headroom for wide angle video shoots. The final design consisted of installing a new steel transfer beam over 54 feet long, 44 inches deep, and weighing almost eighteen tons. The benefit of keeping video and photography production on site resulted in an operating cost saving of $1,000,000 a year. Additionally the production staff stays on site making it easier to collaborate with the marketing and design teams.
Gathering spaces at the front and rear of the building allow the company to host public relations events onsite with maximum exposure to the product. The event spaces include large display areas that showcase JustFab's products. The space also includes a full‐service kitchen & café with both indoor and outdoor seating to give employees a chance to relax and host lunch meetings without leaving the office. Shipping containers painted by a legendary graffiti artist who is also a JustFab design collaborator, were repurposed as a café bar and banquet seating. A bleacher stair creates seating for town hall meetings.
The open work environment is designed with fashion designers in mind. The design team & furniture manufacture created custom storage units and platforms to float between the workstations to house shoes, and accessories. This allows for the process to happen out in the open with maximum transparency and communication between departments.
JustFab Inc.’s corporate color pink and the company’s strongly feminine brand were celebrated throughout. The interior & graphics designers worked closely to develop custom wall graphics, signage and carpet that reflect the brand. Taking our inspiration from clothing patterns & stitching styles the wall graphics became collage illustrations and plywood paneling matching a bias cut create beautiful textured pattern. Beyond planning principals the startup culture of the company was also captured by embracing the industrial elements of the building leaving them raw and exposed. The result is a sophisticated impactful and highly efficient creative community that is JustFab.
