Vocational School of Tübingen Chemical Laboratory

The Tübingen vocational school is a training school for crafts, industry, medicine and natural sciences. It was founded as a voluntary Sunday school for young craftsmen in 1827. After the statutory introduction of vocational schooling for apprentices, a compulsory school was established in 1910, which moved to a new building on Raichbachstrasse in Tübingen in 1981.

During the course of reconstruction work the chemical laboratory of the vocational school was equipped with new luminaires in autumn 2016. The project required the replacement of the lighting in line with the new laboratory equipment as well as the adjustment of the lighting intensity and the optimization of the energy consumption. Furthermore, an improvement to the acoustic conditions in the classroom was desired but with no additional construction work to be planned, thus the existing steel grid ceiling with inserts had to remain modifiable and the luminaires installed in the existing ceiling grid.

The contracted lighting designer, Zeeb + Frisch, was looking for a luminaire provider that met the requirements and decided to utilize the "p.quiet" acoustic dampening light fixture manufactured by "planlicht". The chemical laboratory was equipped with a total of five acoustic dampening lights. The luminaires were custom built in order to achieve optimum efficiency and adaptability for the room. pure2 profiles (1x 1200x2400mm and 4x 1210x1210mm) were combined with the sound absorber "Wollä" from the p.quiet standard program. In addition to high Class A sound absorption, the "organioide®" sound absorber, based on organic sheep wool, ensures a pleasant room environment and an attractive appearance with its natural wool surface structure.

The luminaires utilized suspension mounting with a 4000K light temperature and low output. They are dimmable and emit efficient, glare-free light with a microprismatic cover for work requiring high concentration and focus. Additionally the overall acoustics of the room were significantly improved after project completion.
