With its steep cliffs over the crystal-clear water and lush vegetation, the Ionian island of Zakynthos used to be known as the Flower of the Levant. In an exposed location on the hillside, the flowing floor plan of the villa covers two levels and creates generous views and spaces for up to eight people.
The newbuild projects out from the hillside on a narrow plateau and opens up on all sides as a glazed volume. The clear, cubic design makes a strong statement without appearing out of place. This is achieved through the use of just a few materials: white plastered areas, large-format glazing and a natural stone wall as the backbone which connects the solidity of the construction with the lightness and elegance of the modern architecture. The same effect is created by the clever arrangement of the wall panels and room edges, which soften the severity of the geometry. With the focus on the extraordinary view of the Ionian Sea, the villa was developed from the inside out. The view from all the rooms is therefore directed far over the sea, which meant that larger openings without thresholds were required. Room-height glazing with minimal profile face widths for the sliding units enable a maximum field of vision, from both the sleeping and living spaces and the bathrooms. The newbuild also comes alive through the interplay of light and shadow. The pergolas provide necessary sun shading as well as a sheltered place to relax. The generous connections between indoors and outdoors give residents the feeling that they are living in a diverse natural environment.
The villa was designed as a place to retreat at all times of the year, with particular attention being paid to the level of energy efficiency as well as thermal insulation and sound reduction. Comfort and efficiency is achieved through the heating and cooling systems in the floor, as well as the choice of the ASS 77 sliding system.
