The apartment, situated in a newly renovated building in Prague’s Vinohrady district, boasts a spacious 4+kk layout. The interior design also included a slight modification to the layout, which involved enlarging the main living space with a kitchen and creating a walk-in closet in the entryway. This design reflects both the current needs of the young owner, who lives there with his young daughter, and the potential for future family growth.
Modern Design Inspired by Traditional Elegance
The aim of the design was to combine traditional elements of a Vinohrady apartment with modern, timeless materials such as wood, stone, and steel, and accessories in earthy tones, creating a calm and cozy atmosphere. The apartment’s color scheme also reflects the fact that it is currently a bachelor’s space. Shades of gray are used, complemented by dark stone, dark-stained oak veneer furniture, and a wooden floor that follows historical patterns. The interior also includes several paintings from the owner's contemporary collection, with space prepared for future additions.
Layout Solution
The newly created walk-in closet in the entryway is designed as furniture in dark gray color to avoid visually separating the hallway from the rest of the apartment. This is further enhanced by a passageway through the freestanding cabinet, allowing a view through the entire hallway. The hallway is lit by natural light from large glass doors leading to the main living space with a kitchen. In addition, the hallway provides access to the child's room, home office, and bathroom, making it the heart of the apartment. The hallway’s ceiling is lowered to connect with the kitchen space, and both the walls and ceiling are finished in a light gray concrete plaster. The chosen color combination gives the space a sense of softness and elegance, while the dark gray furniture combined with steel elements adds a touch of strictness.
Living Area and Bedroom
The kitchen is visually separated from the main living space by a lowered ceiling, and its materials match the hallway, with which it is connected through large glass doors with a black frame. The kitchen is dominated by a stone kitchen island made of natural dark quartzite, which extends into a massive dark wooden table with a steel base. Steel is also used for elements of the bookshelves. The living area is furnished in light earthy tones and features minimal furniture, with the main focus being a large, comfortable sofa. Above the sofa, a prominent cornice sets the stage for a future artwork.
Vinohrady apartments have high ceilings, allowing for the use of striking lighting fixtures, such as those from Lasvit and Moooi, which adorn the living space and add a touch of nobility.
From the main living space, one enters the owner's bedroom. The walk-in closet, which is passed through first, partially mirrors the design of the kitchen. Other elements are simple in shape, with a white finish combined with white perforated metal. The furniture is semi-transparent, providing a gentle separation between the closet and the rest of the bedroom.
The sleeping area features a dark bed with a bold headboard, and the shelves opposite serve not only for displaying artworks but also for other decorations. Above the bed is another striking metal light fixture by Moooi.
The bedroom has its own bathroom, whose main feature is natural blue Quartzite Blue Roma stone, complemented by light gray concrete plaster and a custom-made concrete sink. The daughter’s bathroom is similarly styled, but also includes storage units in dark veneer. The simple material choices in both bathrooms allow the bold patterns of the blue natural stone to stand out. Stainless steel accessories further enhance the purity of the materials.
Children's Room and Study
The children’s room, belonging to the owner’s nearly four-year-old daughter, is styled in light and dark pink tones, with a free play area and a reading nook. It currently meets the needs of a little girl but is designed to grow with her. For example, a house feature in the wardrobe can later be transformed into a storage cabinet. The free play area will eventually accommodate a desk and chair, adapting to her future school years.
The home office is exclusively for the apartment owner, unless his daughter takes over the space, enjoying her favorite rocking chair. The bright area near the entrance is focused on PC work and features a large dark bookshelf. The darker rear area, with access to the balcony, is furnished with a leather sofa and rocking chair for relaxing with friends and reading. This section is marked by linen wallpaper on the wall and ceiling in a bronze tone, complemented by a bold light fixture with leather accents.
The Apartment as a Whole, a Home
The atmosphere and pleasant living experience in the apartment are enhanced by live plants, textile accessories made of natural materials and textures for both curtains and decorative pillows and throws. Last but not least, the interior fragrance and decorative functional items further emphasize the overall ambiance.
