With his signature technique of juxtaposing and overlapping contrasting eras and styles, interior designer and founder of Studio Janréji, Régis Conseil, revives The Moulin de la Galette using contemporary design codes to respect but not erase not the restaurants’ colourful past.
Immortalised by artists such as Renoir (Bal du Moulin de la Galette), Toulouse-Lautrec, Van Gogh and Picasso, The Moulin de la Galette restaurant had long since fallen victim to tourism, offering a kitsch reflection of Paris in a bygone era. Rightfully re-positioning The Moulin de la Galette as top-end address with a unique identity steeped in history, the refurbishments under the art direction of Studio Janréji involved a 360° make-over of the restaurant.
The brutal modernism of the restaurants’ newly exposed raw concrete ceiling, left in its simplicity, engage with the refined decorative wooden panelling of the walls; the lower wall in rich dark wood and the upper wall, a delicate shade of ivy. The conflicting materials overlap, contrast, yet complete. Creating harmony and giving overall direction to the interior of the restaurant. The generous yet sober lines of the soft velvet seating, in royal blue and taupe, culminate the blend of styles and materials.
The metallic Mondian-esque structure of the bar is crowned by the apparent interior wooden structure of the original industrial mill. The bold juxtaposition, rich in promise, invites the evening to roll merrily into the small hours.
The table frequented by actress-singer Dalida has been conserved, with a brass name-plate in her honour. Keeping its original place in the restaurant and above all bearing witness to The Moulin de la Galette’s extraordinary past.
