There are several theories, why San Zhi was abandoned or never completely moved into. One theory says, that there were several mysterious accidents during the construction of the complex that made the inhabitants believe, the site was cursed. The building owner was supposedly forced to stop the construction because of this.
Another more plausible theory says, that he simply ran out of money. From an architectonic point of view, San Zhi’s architecture, with its modular design and its cantilevered constructions, remains, even compared to today’s standards, innovative.
