×Looking back, says Jürg Ammann, he was pretty audacious and naive when he took the plunge and set up his own business 18 years ago. Today the designer and interior designer produces bespoke one-offs and pieces for his own label Piuric: simple furniture reduced to the essentials.
At his own workshop, Ammann carries out almost every step in the process himself. He works away at prototypes, welds, mills and shapes, sews and upholsters. The upholstered furniture is particularly challenging to make: sofas and chairs with seats so slender they almost seem to defy the laws of statics. In order to achieve the necessary stability, Ammann also designs the metal legs for the furniture himself. “Developing a good cast metal base can easily take three months. I use a little foundry at Lake Hallwil; later on, the bases are sanded and polished by hand. That comes at a price, but it definitely pays off,” says the designer.
Ammann sources his fabrics from Switzerland or Europe. “Suppliers who sell premium furnishing fabrics generally meet the usual sustainability standards. But you have to be more careful with leather,” explains Ammann. The hides from his supplier are certified with the Blue Angel eco-label. But when he gets quotes from international producers offering inexpensive prices, Ammann just shakes his head. He cherishes his independence and freedom too much: being a “little guy” means he’s not under pressure to sacrifice quality for the sake of increased profitability.
