To begin with, the former machine shop close to the city centre betrays no sign of its new purpose. Back in 2005, it came up for sale at the perfect time for Pforzheim entrepreneur Jürgen Glauner – and his company, LDM GmbH, relocated for the second time since it was founded 22 years ago.
Elegant: the high-gloss finish gives the elliptical modules of the "Cosmo" series a very upscale look. In the "Grande Uno" version they are interlinked to create a luminaire with a length of 71.5 cm

×This is where 18 employees now process, assemble and finish the approximately 6000 bought-in components for a compelling luminaire collection consisting of the six product lines "EccoLed", "Smarty", "Santo", "Cosmo", "Luna" and "Mono". With the exception of "Smarty" and "Santo", all the lines include not just individual luminaires but track-mounted modules as well. The design language of almost the entire collection is characterised by clear-cut, circular and rod-shaped elements, as well as by cylindrical, rotationally symmetric glass diffusers that are available in various colours on request. "Cosmo" is the odd one out in this respect and is defined entirely by elliptical forms.
The only light sources used are neutral or warm-white LEDs and low-voltage halogen lamps. Depending on the product line, various top-quality surface finishes are available for the body of the luminaire, as well as for the canopies and transformer housings. With "EccoLed" and "Smarty", the user can also change the beam angle of the LEDs whenever he likes by choosing one of the three interchangeable lens modules supplied with the product. All in all, the collection provides a great deal of scope for individualisation, especially as several of the product lines are based on forms suitable for harmonious combinations.

×For all its affinity with design, however, the company does not see itself as a design intermediary; accordingly, almost all its products are in-house designs. Jürgen Glauner believes the fact that the luminaires are adapted to customer requirements is a major factor in the company's success as it allows for even more individuality than is already provided by the modular concept. This is particularly attractive for lighting designers, who often depend on custom solutions for the success of their projects. The best way to get an overview of what the company offers is to have a look at the current product literature, which is structured with exemplary clarity that will appeal to planning professionals and consumers alike.

×The fact that the "Magalog" – a creative combination of magazine and catalogue – is published in two languages heralds the start of export activities, the marketing for which will be based in part on the "Made in Germany" promise. Because in LDM's case, this venerable label is more than an empty phrase: no fewer than 90 percent of all the components used originate from Germany. It's a good thing that both the piece of land and the building still have some growth potential to offer, because Jürgen Glauner has no shortage of new ideas for the future either.
