Cut out for comfort: MENU

Since their relaunch of the brand in 2012, the Danish Modernist furniture brand MENU have begun to return to Scandinavian design values with their concept of ‘Modernism Reimagined’, an ideology that believes in including only what is necessary, never less and nothing more.

MENU’s collections combine the contemporary clean lines and natural materials of minimalism in new designers’ works, with the reintroduction of classic Scandinavian designs, seamlessly joining the contemporary works as a symbol of what it truly means to be timeless.

To celebrate MENU’s passion for mid-century modernism, they’ve reintroduced Ib Kofod-Larsen’s classic Knitting Chair (from 1951) to a new generation of international Danish Modernist fans.

The classic Knitting Chair’s immortal profile is characterised by a pitched, relaxed silhouette. Laid over its A-frame base sits gently curved seat and backrests, while it’s distinguishing cut-out armrests provide the perfect, sculptured form with minimal fuss. The distinctive armrests, designed as simply as an absence of matter, are a perfect example of aesthetics following function, gently coaxing the body into a comfortable position with ideal arm and lumbar support for more dexterous tasks.

Originally released only as a limited edition, the chair quickly became a valuable collector’s item but now the design is set to become an icon to a whole new generation of Modernists. Before joining the regular MENU collection in February 2019, the initial limited-edition run of just 99 individually-engraved Knitting Chairs will follow the exact design of the original classic, with a stained and waxed solid oak frame and Dakar Aniline leather upholstery.
