×It could be tempting for Cassina to sit back and simply live off its legacy – it would certainly be comfortable – yet the company continues to keep ahead of the curve. New sofa systems such as Esosoft, Sengu Bold and Moncloud respond to the flexibility required for contemporary life and innovate new production techniques and alternative materials.
Take the Esosoft sofa, designed by architect Antonio Citterio as his debut for Cassina. With eight modules, its informality is conducive to a fluid domestic interior. Meanwhile the aluminium exoskeleton has an organic-shaped shell that hosts a series of comfortable cushions in which circular materials have been employed, such as recycled PET wadding.

×Sengu Bold, an evolution of the Sengu model, by Patricia Urquiola, encourages socialising thanks to its open forms – a bounteous, floor-skimming base and a wide range of configurations. Its soft backrest cushions are padded with recycled PET fibre and clad in fabric with a magnified texture contributing to its ‘bold status’.

×Urquiola is also the pioneer behind Moncloud, a generously upholstered, convivial sofa system that floats above the ground like a cloud. Constructed for ease of end-of-life disassembly, it combines a linear metal frame with a sculpted body wrapped in recycled PET wadding, an innovation geared towards minimising the use of polyurethane foam. Combining comfort and circularity, Moncloud defines Cassina’s progressive curve and marks major design progress in the furniture industry.
