Word up!: DALI

DALI’s dedication to achieving aural perfection is masterminded at its headquarters in Jutland, Denmark, where its Custom Installation (CI) hi-fi speakers are fabricated by the company’s acoustic-engineering specialists. Its high-performance speakers remedy the classic problem afflicting mediocre sound systems, typified – as we have all experienced – by those baffling, virtually inaudible announcements issuing from poor speakers in cavernous public spaces.

By contrast, DALI’s superior speakers reproduce voice frequencies clearly, rendering voices and instrumentation easily distinguishable. To this end, a multitude of woofers and tweeters – discreetly secreted within the speakers – faithfully recreate all the frequencies of the original sound. While only a small number of DALI’s wide-dispersion speakers are needed to guarantee impeccable sound quality in large spaces, in smaller rooms, it’s important to avoid installing very small speakers as these reduce the lower frequency sounds unless they incorporate a well-designed woofer system.

As for woofer cone sizes, the important point to note is that woofers should deliver the lower frequency range of the audible spectrum with the necessary power. It’s always key for any sound design that the speaker setup is customised based on room shape and size as well as purpose. This will create the greatest audio experience and client satisfaction.

In a shop featuring ambient sound, wide-dispersion speakers create a bigger arena of clearly-heard sound played at a lower volume. An analogy could be made here between sound produced by speakers and light beams cast by lamps: the larger light beam emanating from wide-angled lamps is comparable to the broad area of sound emerging from wide-dispersion speakers. Conversely, narrow-beam lamps shed much less light, just as toed-in speakers spread sound over a smaller area. And, incidentally, DALI’s installers attach them so securely to walls and ceilings that they never cause sound-distorting vibrations.

Sound quality is crucial from another perspective: it can impact, positively or negatively, on the listener’s comfort and wellbeing. Simply put, sub-standard sound quality forces listeners to strain their ears – an enervating outcome causing stress and tiredness. By contrast, the clear, audible sound that DALI’s speakers project into large spaces is uplifting and energising.
