Baccarat crystal harmoniously combines the savoir-faire and creativity in both technique and art. Having followed and sometimes preceded all French society’s aesthetic and decorative evolutions, since its creation in the 20th century, the Baccarat has become a privileged venue where designers can express themselves freely. The total complicity between the artists and the craftsmen, their complementary working techniques and the richness of their ‘four hands’ collaboration have resulted in unique objects full of spirit, imagination and audacity.
Since 1992 Marcial Berro, Andrée Putman, Claude Lalanne, Jean Boggio, Savinel & Rozé (the glass service Véga, 1994 and then the appropriately named Plume chandelier, 2002), Mathias (Mille Nuits collection, 2002) have regularly collaborated with Baccarat, creating eternal best-sellers : the Mille Nuits collection, which ranges from lighting to table services, is one of the brand’s mainstays.
In 2003 the choice of Philippe Starck to conceive the fantastical décor for the Baccarat House, 11 Place des Etats-Unis, in the former Noailles mansion, followed by the opening of the Baccarat House in Moscow, marked the beginning a major collaboration. The designer immediately captured the synergy between his pertinent and iconoclastic vision and the spirit of Baccarat – a Sleeping Beauty. He gave the opportunity for the brand to move forward towards a new ambition and amplified its identity by using every single element from its DNA. A series of Starck’s very successful global projects emphasized Baccarat’s alluring and luxurious image: the black Zénith chandelier in 2003, the Darkside Collection in 2005, the Our Fire candlestick in 2006, the humoristic Hic! ceiling lamp in 2009 turned Baccarat into a new trend setter…. Philippe Starck, who is either rigorous, sensitive, playful, childish or just a visionary, is in complete osmosis with Baccarat.
The teaming up in 2002 with the legendary Italian designer Ettore Sottsass (Ninurta vases, Uttu vases and Enki vases) followed by the collaboration with the architect-designer William Sawaya in 2004 (ruby red cactus Sahtel Bourj vase) are equally strong factors in the company’s evolution. These were followed by collections signed by Kenzo Takada with Lumières d’Asie in 2006 (inspired by the designer’s Asian roots) and Arik Levy (Intangible in 2007 and Torch and Fantôme in 2008) which were free interpretations of traditional chandelier craft.
2009 saw the triumph of the Spanish designer, Jaime Hayon’s Crystal Candy Set collection; a collection which was both classic and innovative with the introduction of the combination of crystal with ceramics.
2010 sees the collaboration with the Dutch designer Marcel Wanders as well as the early beginnings of a collection Outdoor/Indoor designed by the lighting designer Yann Kersalé, the architect Jean Nouvel’s close collaborator.
