David Darling and Joshua Aidlin

With a shared interest in exploring design across a wide range of scales, programs, and disciplines, partners Joshua Aidlin and David Darling started Aidlin Darling Design around a woodshop in 1997. With an emphasis on designing for all of the senses they have cultivated a diverse and collaborative studio that acts as the creative hub for an extended network of builders, fabricators, artists, engineers, chefs, and other collaborators. The firm’s work explores a closely held conviction that design can enlighten the human spirit by engaging all of the senses.
This notion was recently on display at their exhibit “Site & Senses” at the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art, and is reflected in a diverse range of projects including a restaurant in the new SFMOMA, a 160,000 square foot LEED Gold brewery in San Leandro, and Stanford University’s Windhover Contemplative Center, a non-denominational art chapel that serves as a refuge for students and faculty. Recent work includes projects as far away as Doha Qatar and Hong Kong, and as diverse as a high school in Santa Rosa, a Cultural Arts Center in San Francisco, and several wineries that push the boundaries of sustainability in agriculture and building.
In recent years, the firm has garnered over 125 regional, national, and international awards including Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt’s National Design Award for their body of work, a James Beard Award, five American Architecture Awards from the Chicago Athenaeum, two International Civic Trust Awards, and several regional and national awards from the AIA, IIDA, and ASLA.
Biography
Joshua Aidlin, AIA
Joshua Aidlin holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Cincinnati where his thesis project was awarded first prize by the American Institute of Architects. Mr. Aidlin’s work explores the principles of design for multi-sensory human experience through a broad range of project scales, and his tireless pursuit of sustainable design has been recognized locally, nationally and abroad through various publications, lectures and symposia. His recently completed work includes the first LEED NC Gold commercial building in San Francisco and a LEED CI Platinum restaurant, a LEED Platinum / Net Zero Energy home, as well as the award-winning Windhover Contemplative Center on the campus of Stanford University.
David Darling, AIA, IIDA, ASLA
David Darling holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Cincinnati where his student work was exhibited internationally and won several awards including a Lyceum Fellowship Grant. He has developed his interest in the connection between art, food, wine, agriculture through his involvement in Slow Food USA, the James Beard Foundation, and through his firm’s work on a wide range of projects including a destination restaurant for the new SFMOMA, a contemplative art chapel at Stanford University, a 160,000 square foot LEED Gold craft brewery in San Leandro, and several wineries that push the boundaries of sustainability in agriculture and architecture.
