EN SAVOIR PLUS SUR ASKMAN DESIGN
Company
Askman Furniture is Danish artistic craftsmanship at its very best.
The history of Askman Furniture dates back to 1913, and throughout the years a variety of designer wood items has been developed such as: tables, stools, trays, room dividers and items for the dining table.
‘Functionality, aesthetics, and quality above all’, this is the mentality of Askman Furniture.
According to us at Askman Furniture, your furniture should please you by working as comfortable and functional tools in your everyday life – the functionality must never be compromised.
Furthermore, furniture should grab your attention and speak to your soul – the aesthetic must amaze your senses.
Shortly speaking, at Askman Furniture we believe in functional art. Departing from this deeply rooted belief, we produce Danish artistic craftsmanship.
Manufacturing
Our products are created through inspiring collaboration between contemporary designers and Askman Furniture’s more than 100 years of woodworking skills, making each item a timeless, beautiful design.
We treasure the Danish quality by producing all our furniture as well as the packing in Denmark.
Due to our great respect for the environment, the veneers used in our production all come from sustainable woodlands. In addition, we care about our employees’ work environment by using formaldehyde-free lack.
History
Askman Furniture was founded in 1913 by Carl Alfred Askman, and during the early years, the company produced mainly wooden toys, handles, and other milled articles for the domestic market.
In 1945, Svend Oluf Askman, the son of the founder, took over the company and the production was expanded to include high-quality gift items like pepper mills, salad bowls and cutting boards. Designed by well-known Danish architects like Kaj Bojesen, Jens Quistgaard and Erik Magnussen these gift items marked the beginning of exports for Askman Furniture.
In 1970 Peter Askman became the third-generation owner. Only 26 years old at the time, Peter Askman set out to maintain the traditions and craftsmanship which his family had installed at Askman Furniture. Looking at the company today, it is clear that he successfully completed that objective.
In 2017, Peter Askman sold Askman Furniture to a group of investors, who aim to continue the long heritage of craftsmanship. The company’s focus is to emphasize the essential value of the best possible materials, with great respect to nature and wildlife.
Since the time when Peter Askman ran the company, the production has included furniture in addition to the gift items, and the products are designed and developed in cooperation with some of the best and most well-known Danish architects, among some of them Jørgen Møller and Hans Sandgren Jakobsen.
What is an Askman?
It is an easy stretch to argue that modern Danish design is inspired by the functional simplicity and craftsmanship embodied in the Viking ships from around 1000 AD.
The Danish Vikings’ shipbuilding skills at that time were better than those of their neighbours, and thanks to these skills, the Danish Vikings ruled much of Northern Europe including parts of England.
The term ‘Askman’ derived from the Vikings’ shipbuilding, as an ‘Askman’ was a person skilled in building the parts of a Viking ship that was built in ashwood. Hence the Askman heritage is uniquely entwined with modern Danish design.
