Kanner Architects occupies a unique position in architecture today. The firm has established its own approach to developing and producing designs of iconic modernist architecture that make a cohesive statement aesthetically and contextually. Each project is treated as an endeavor of passion; we take our own sensibilities as a studio and run it through the filter of the project’s specific challenges. Not only sensitive to site and budget, but mindful of conservation and sustainability, we take every opportunity to rely on creativity for design solutions.
Whether projects are large or small, urban or rural, Kanner Architects embraces the notion that buildings are meant to be functional, but must also be places of joy – open and accessible, timeless and inspirational. Every project must enhance the built environment.
Kanner Architects is a third generation firm that has been in operation in the Los Angeles area for over 60 years. Internationally recognized, Kanner has garnered over 50 design awards in recent years, many from the local, state and national chapters of the American Institute of Architects. Our collaboration with Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects won the 2010 AIACC and AIA/LA Awards. The firm won the 2008 AIA National Housing Award, the 2008 AIA National Honor Award, and the 2006 AIA National Housing Committee Award. It has also brought home the Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design Award, the Next LA Award, the IDEA Award as well as numerous local Los Angeles Business Council Awards.
In addition to being included in several books, Kanner Architects has been featured in articles in the magazines Abitare, the Architect’s Newspaper, Architecture, Architectural Record, Architectural Digest, Dwell, GRID, Interior Design, L’Arca, L.A. Architect, Metropolis, the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times and Trends. Beyond our extensive local work, we have designed projects in New York, Nashville, Oakland, Ghana as well as 130 Stores for PUMA, which appear in every major city in North America, Europe and Asia. Monographs on the firm’s work were published in 1998 and 2006.
