“If light can activate hormones, cure disease and grow our crops...light might be considered our biggest benefactor”. These are the words used by Gustavo Avilés to introduce vision and philosophy of Lighteam, the architectural lighting design firm he founded. Gustavo Avilés is an architectural lighting designer with a professional, academic development and investigation of technical resources and luminaries, in Mexico, Europe and the United States.
The dedication and purpose of development for a quality culture in architectural lighting have conducted his trajectory to be a professor in the lighting design courses of Master and Post-Grade for the Mexico National and Autonomy University, Anahuac University (North and South locations), Iberoamericana University and other academic institutions.
The Mexican Pavilion on the Universal Fair of Hannover 2000, Germany, the Siebel Corporate - l´Etoile, Rond Point in Paris, the Chopo Museum in Mexico City and the Lighting Master Plan for the City of San Luis Potosi, Mexico, are just some of his recent and representative works. He has also realized the lighting design project for the Republic Senate and Perisur Mall in Mexico City and Modern Art Museum in Tlaxcala, Mexico.
Gustavo Avilés design experience ranges from historical and institutional building, to corporate and commercial spaces. He has got in five occasions the IESNA recognition Award of Merit Edwin – F. Guth Memorial for projects such as Jose Luis Cuevas Museum, Chapultepec Castle, The Flag Pavilion, TELEVISA, Master Channel Center and Sergio Hernandez Museum. In 2006 he received from IALD Special Citation for Sensitive use of colour and light to respond to architectural form and the National Award for Art Creators in the discipline of Architectural Lighting Design. Besides, with his lighting master plan project for the city of San Luis Potosi, he obtain obtained third prize at the International City-People-Light Award, organized by Luci and Philips.
In October 2006 he won the first prize of the audience for the Installation “On Earth as it is in Heaven” in the Lichtrouten Internacional Forum for art of light and lighting design.
He is member of many lighting designers’ organisations such as PLDA, ACE, IESNA and founder of DIM with other Mexican colleagues.
He is usually been invited to lectures, courses, seminars and fairs in Milan, Portugal, Brazil, Germany and Finland as one of the most enthusiastic lighting designers on the national and international context.
