Antonius Quodt
Profile
Antonius Quodt develops new perspectives for the realization of architectural projects involving light and sound concepts. He and his team in Cologne combine their extensive knowledge of stage technology and architectural lighting to wake emotions in using different lighting technologies.
Antonius Quodt discovered his interest in lighting at the age of 16 while working for a school theater project to develop the lighting concept. Fast forward to twenty years later and Antonius Quodt and his firm LightLife Gesellschaft für audiovisuelle Erlebnisse mbH is one of the best-known light designers in all of Germany.
After finishing his secondary education it was clear to him that a career in stage tech was his job of choice, although in the 80´s this occupation was not in existence. As a result he studied radio and television technology and became experience in electronics and electrical technology.
He worked as a free lancer at the Cologne based firm Showtec Gmbh. During his experience there he was able to learn the basics of lighting technology and even received training to become a Vari-Lite operator. At this point he also was developing the first lighting concepts for small concert productions.
In the summer of 1992 he substituted for the light designer of the Chinese National Circus which was on tour in Austria. The collaboration with Andre Heller, the artistic director, still continues.
His first contact to architectural lighting was in 1995 with the “Swarovski Crystal World” in Wattens, Austria. This was the first project involving architectural lighting and it became apparent to him at this point of the differences to stage work.
In 1996 the firm LightLife GmbH was formed with Antonius Quodt as director. Throughout this period Lightlife was responsible for various projects including the German tour of the Argentinean tenor Jose Cura and the lighting concept for the television tower in Siemianowice, Poland. Soon after they developed concepts for the RWE-Meteorite Park in Essen the “Wunderkammer“ utilizing nearly 40 km fiber optic lighting cable and the Museum in Bregenz, Austria for the American neon artist Keith Sonnier.
One of the most famous projects after the Pharmacy exhibition in the German Museum Munich or the Traxon showroom in Frankfurt is the FIFA WM Globe for the FIFA world championship 2006. The official opening of the globe took place with the Brandburger Tor as the backdrop. The 20-meter high soccerball is by daylight a “normal” ball but at night it evolves into a glowing globe for its public.
