Profile
Richard Beard Architects is a 15-person firm based in San Francisco and founded by architect Richard Beard. The firm is focused on creating public and private spaces that sensitively respond to their surroundings while seamlessly merging architecture with interiors and furnishings. Best known for residences — often for collectors of art and antiques — the studio is also recognized for its work updating historically sensitive buildings.
Culture and craft combine with proportion and scale to yield bespoke results tailored to the project’s context and to the client’s needs. In addition to private residences, the firm’s work includes multifamily residential buildings, as well as hospitality and commercial projects located throughout the United States, and in Japan, Italy, and Mexico.
“Our work is about exploring the environments that help shape the intimate relationships we share with others and with nature,” notes Beard. “We strive to create a comfortable luxury where the constraints of time disappear.”
The firm’s current work in Japan includes several large-scale luxury senior housing developments, exemplified by the 35-story Sun City Kobe Tower, and the reimagining and transformation of a 1950s-era department store in Musashino, Japan. Among the firm’s private residence work is the restoration and renovation of the historic McIntyre Residence, originally designed by Joseph Esherick in 1959.
Notable past residences can be found in San Francisco, Big Sur, Napa Valley, and at Santa Lucia Preserve outside of Carmel, California. In addition to residences, past projects include collaborations with companies as diverse as Theorum Winery, Mumm Napa Valley, Polo Ralph Lauren, Half Century More Tokyo, the National Park Service, and Agassi-Graff, LLC.
Beard and his firm have received numerous honors, including recognition from the American Institute of Architects, the International Interior Design Association, and The Institute of Classical Architecture & Art, among others. The firm’s work has appeared in numerous publications and books, such as Architectural Digest, The New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Western Art & Architecture, Interior Design, and Luxe.
