EN SAVOIR PLUS SUR URBAN FABRIC RUGS
INTRO
Explore your floors.
Urban Fabric creates memorable, premium-quality rugs of cities from around the world. They recognize that each city has a unique form and character – like a fingerprint – and translate that into plush, handmade, 3D relief rugs of your favorite place.
Each rug illustrates the uniqueness of the city it represents. The compositions, together with the selected colors, celebrate this uniqueness and convey a sense of place. Their Toronto Rug, for example, is designed in an elegant white-on-white colorway, playfully called “Salt on Snow”- a nod to the city’s long, snowy, winters. The unique skewed shape of the rug is also significant. It was devised to represent the 17-degree discrepancy between true north and the actual orientation of Toronto’s street grid.
OUR STORY
URBAN FABRIC® began as a passion project, with a vision to translate the beautiful patterns of our infrastructure, architecture and agriculture into memorable handmade rugs.
As a young designer, Founder Andrei Zerebecky submitted this vision to Toronto’s Interior Design Show (IDS) for consideration as an exhibitor in their curated ‘Prototype’ section. Their acceptance of Zerebecky’s concept in 2007 prompted the first ‘Urban Fabric’ rug prototype and spawned the first rug designs of their award-winning signature collection. Since then, their collection of city and landscape rugs has grown tremendously to include captivating designs from around the globe. Their works have been collected by prestigious institutions like the LACMA, K-11 Shanghai, Toronto’s Royal Ontario Museum, Cornel and Princeton Universities, and grace the floors of numerous Government of Canada’s Embassies and Ambassador’s Residences throughout the world.

COLLABORATIONS
URBAN FABRIC collaborates with outstanding artists and designers to produce stunning, innovative rugs in limited edition collections. Colorful modern collections by Elena Manferdini and John Monteith are based on artworks they’ve developed in response to our built environment. Newer collections by Jimenez Lai of Bureau Spectacular and MOS Architecture venture into the realm of conceptual design objects. Lai’s collection questions the traditional relationship between architecture and textiles, with rug designs that climb walls, slip between two rooms or fit into the corner of a room.
We are continuously developing new rug collections with exciting new collaborators. Get in touch with us and watch for news on new product and collection releases.

CRAFTSMANSHIP
We love what we do and it shows. We demand the highest standards of quality, from the raw materials we source to the final, painstakingly handmade rugs we produce. One of our greatest assets is our team of incredibly skilled craftsmen, who work in our ‘Good Weave’ certified production house. These artisans practice age-old techniques that were handed down by their ancestors. They take pride in the meticulous and challenging nature of this handmade craft. We source our New Zealand virgin wool from vendors certified by ‘Wools of New Zealand’ to provide the highest quality and durability to your new rug.
SUSTAINABILITY
URBAN FABRIC’s production house is proudly GoodWeave certified, assuring it
provides adult artisans good working conditions and a living salary. It also means your purchase supports programs that educate children and improve working conditions for adults in their community. This commitment not only ensures the preservation of an ancient craft but also supports a lineage of artisans whose skills have been passed down through generations.
The brand's commitment to the environment is also evident in its choice of materials. NZ Wool is not only a renewable resource but the best quality and most durable wool available. The use of New Zealand wool, ethically sourced from sustainable farms bearing the “Wools of NZ” mark, is a testament to the brand's eco-conscious approach. This not only ensures that the rugs are crafted from eco-friendly materials but also adds a layer of authenticity and warmth to each piece. Their newest explorations now include tufting and weaving post-consumer recycled content like PET plastics, and ‘up-cycling’ surplus dyed wools into chic designs that celebrate sustainable reuse.
