Yamazaki Kentaro
Biography
Kentaro Yamazaki was born in Chiba, Japan in 1976. After graduating from Kogakuin University with an M.A. he established his own architectural design firm, Yamazaki Kentaro Design Workshop in 2008. He opened a branch office in Shanghai in 2011 and has been lecturing at Kogakuin University since 2014.
His projects include the “Itoman Gyomin Shokudo” in Okinawa that was constructed of Ryukyu limestone using traditional construction methods of the region in collaboration with local residents, the “Sayanomoto Clinic” for sufferers of dementia and their families, the “Hakusui Nursery School” which on places the receptive minds of young children in nature, and a day-care center which connects the local community by fostering cooperation in nursing and childcare.
He has won various domestic and international design awards, such as the Best 100 and the Special Award in the Good Design Award (Japan). He was also Commended in AR Emerging Architecture Awards 2015 (UK).
“We believe that the true meaning of architecture is not only a portion of society, but also something that should strive to become a part of our daily life. With this in mind, we believe that good architecture is more than simply stimulating, it should also express a certain type of spontaneity.”
