Jointly with ECE, Hamburg, Ansorg has succeeded in creating a lighting conception that is coherent and underscores the special nature of the centre.
Beneath the membrane roof structure, over an area of 30,000 square metres a two-storey shop passageway with about 130 shops and stores is located. As regards the lighting, Ansorg was responsible on the manufacturing side during the construction phase for the complete project management, planning and control. All of the lighting solutions were developed and co-ordinated by Ansorg and the ECE on a customised basis in keeping with the architecture of the Rhein-Galerie. “Atmosphere due to various lighting scenarios as well as a decorative and highly accentuated general lighting" – those were the terms of reference of ECE for the lighting conception. To that end, there was a special focus on the use of the daylight which enters through the centre’s glass roofs, ensuring an open, friendly atmosphere in the mall’s interior.

The ambient lighting of the Rhein-Galerie shopping centre is provided by means of special recessed Milieu luminaires with a small ceiling cut-out of 185mm in diameter. The luminaires are each fitted with two HIT 70W-840/830 lamps which support the daylight. In the evening mood, on the other hand, only one lamp with the light colour temperature of 3000K is in operation.
Large-area semi-recessed luminaires with a diameter of 1600mm shape the roof of the mall and likewise follow the lighting control system. They are equipped with fluorescent lamps. In the atriums, by means of their systematic colour control system additional accent luminaires using LED technology make it possible to create scenarios with abundant variants which underline the adventure nature of the shopping centre.

A highlight at the centre of the Rhein-Galerie is the ‘Whale’, a striking luminaire structure, 16m long and 4m wide. Arranged above a translucent stretch film, the 750 RGB LED elements make possible a large number of dynamic lighting scenes which are integrated into the overall lighting control system. Along the peripheral areas, this impressive system of luminaires is equipped with 16 gimble-mounted luminaires ensuring that there is additional accent lighting. Splashing about in the water all around this whale are ‘little fish‘, those suspended luminaires which are equipped with three 70-watt reflector lamps). They appear to be coloured since their white/translucent skin is backlit by blue pulsating LED elements. Besides the decorative effect, the complete structure supports the ambient lighting of the mall and at the same time serves to ensure the effective illumination of the basement.

Above the escalator areas, there are further unusual lighting elements of the same luminaire group conjuring up associations with the nearby water in the Rhine. The elliptical luminaires shaped like small ships are each equipped with four 70-watt reflector lamps and are provided all round with a high-quality reflective coating. This produces a diffuse light that yields attractive lighting accents.

Further highlights of the lighting conception are the large-area elliptical luminous ceiling in the format 10m x 3.5m, which are to be found under the two bridges. These luminous ceilings also produce defined lighting atmospheres by means of dimmable fluorescent units. Overall, the lighting concept full of atmosphere underscores the basic orientation of the new Rhein-Galerie shopping centre and its location in the immediate proximity of the water.
