More space, more impact, more safety:
Staircase redevelopment for residential building in Ottobrunn

Stretching from top to bottom of the staircase over nine floors, X-TEND from Carl Stahl Architecture ensures safety on the stairs in the Sternhaus in the upper Bavarian town of Ottobrunn. The stainless steel mesh links the steps and landings of the redeveloped staircase in the building dating back to 1960 in a filigree way, providing protection as well as being a design element.

Successful transformation

The staircase seems transformed after the redevelopment. Gassner & Zarecky Architekten gave the interior a modern and fresh look. A vital yellow contrasts with white and grey tones; changes of colour provide orientation from one floor to the next. A harmonious addition to the picture is the vertical fall protection suspended from top to bottom of the staircase and made of X-TEND from Carl Stahl Architecture. The filigree stainless steel mesh elegantly caresses the trapeze-shaped well, lending the interior openness and lightness. In blackened X-TEND Colours it is visually understated yet has a distinct impact on the overall design. The transparent look means the steps and the handrail attached to the vertical cable struts of the stainless steel system I-SYS seem to be floating.

Protection every step of the way

X-TEND provides protection and at the same time is a design element. As vertical fall protection it satisfies requirements in terms of stability and durability and can withstand even severe stress. 470 square meters of stainless steel mesh reliably protect residents of and visitors to the Sternhaus when going up and downstairs, nevertheless keeping a free view of the space between the steps and the landings. The planners gave the step protection an elegant, delicate design: Virtually unnoticeable, X-TEND is attached to metal posts which are mounted on the sidepieces of stairs and landings in the same colour.
