Friendly interior for a speedy recovery

Chemotherapy is a difficult time for all those involved. Patients must regularly undergo treatment in hospital. This makes it all the more important for the clinic’s interior design to have a positive impact. Patients’ wishes were consciously taken into account when redesigning the Pembrokeshire Haematology & Oncology Day Unit at Withybush General Hospital. Curtains made by drapilux – a leading German textile manufacturer for the healthcare industry in Europe – create a friendly environment and also fulfil practical requirements.

Officially opened by HM Lord-Lieutenant of Dyfed, Sara Edwards, the new day clinic in Withybush General Hospital has been made possible thanks to the generosity of Pembrokeshire residents and charity organisations’ efforts. It is here that patients are treated for malignant tumours and leukaemia.

The unit’s concept was a joint effort by financial donors, fundraisers, the design team, staff from the infection control, sewing and laundry departments, as well as the patients themselves. “The aim was to provide a comfortable and, more importantly, calming area for patients, which also allows staff to work in spacious conditions”, stated Suzanne Davies, who, as chief administrator, was involved in the refurbishment. There are various side rooms such as an isolation unit and a medication preparation room, as well as a room for video conferences, a patient reception point and additional waiting areas.
A pleasant chat or personal privacy – the patient decides
Most patients come to the clinic regularly and like to chat to the person in the next bed during their treatment. Consequently, a conscious decision was made to opt for curtains that encourage social interaction but can also be used to ensure privacy. The design team looked for a manufacturer who offers high-quality fabric printed on both sides and who provides good value for money. “Whilst many other curtains in hospital are only printed on one side, we agreed that it was important that the fabric was attractive not only on the patient’s side, but also on the outside”, explained Suzanne Davies.

Besides aesthetics, the safety aspect also plays a major role. The drapilux flammstop function contributes to the fire safety requirements of a building and complies with all national and international safety standards. It is inherently flame retardant thanks to a special modification of the polyester fibres, meaning that it prevents fire from spreading and smoke from forming.
Ambient air is also crucial for ensuring a pleasant atmosphere. The air-purifying drapilux air function improves the indoor climate. Metal salts integrated into the textiles break up odour molecules. These are then converted into harmless carbon dioxide and water. Unpleasant odours are permanently broken down. Even after frequent washing, the curtains retain both their function and shape.

With the help of generous donations, the entire team was able to create a pleasant atmosphere for patients. “Patients value the lightness and comfort of the clinic’s interior design, as well as the opportunity to have a nice chat or rest”, said Suzanne Davies.
