Situated on Iskar Street in the heart of Sofia, this apartment occupies a coveted spot on a historic street that has recently become a rising destination for tourists. Commissioned as an Airbnb, the project had to offer far more than simple accommodation—it needed to immerse guests in the essence of local culture.
The apartment, housed in a historic building that reflects a cherished era of Sofia’s architectural legacy, was in good condition structurally. However, it required a rethinking of its functional layout and furnishings. High ceilings and large windows, typical of the building’s period, serve as the canvas for this design, which we layered with bold statement furniture and Bulgarian art to embody the intersection of past and present.
Preserving original features such as the intricate door paneling and wooden floors was key to maintaining the apartment’s classical charm. In contrast, we introduced a vibrant color palette, drawing inspiration from the traditional motifs found in the Bulgarian nosiya, to inject modern energy into the space.
Upon entering, guests are welcomed into a cozy vestibule that leads to the different areas of the home. The spacious living room is divided into a dining area and a lounge, framed by pendant lighting and a custom-built bookshelf. Sleek furniture pieces, complemented by thoughtfully curated local artworks, enrich the guest experience with a sense of authenticity.
The master bedroom features a unique headboard with an integrated workspace, offering both functionality and a subtle division of space that maximizes natural light. Custom-made lighting fixtures complete the design. The smaller bedroom, although more compact, is equally inviting. Finished in the same vibrant tones, its design maximizes vertical space with the use of a large mirror, enhancing the room’s sense of depth.
This project merges historical context with modern comfort, offering guests not just a place to stay, but a genuine connection to Sofia’s architectural and cultural heritage.
