PRINCIPAL DESIGN CHALLENGE & RESOLUTION
The principal challenge was to provide our clients with a bright, playful and inviting pediatric dental clinic that would stand in contrast to traditional heath care design. Located in a former porcelain tile factory, the space has an industrial history, which we strove to maintain while adding warmth. Exposed concrete, pops of vibrant yellow, Douglas Fir accents and recycled rubber/cork flooring allowed us to achieve this balance.
SECONDARY DESIGN CHALLENGE & RESOLUTION
The secondary challenge was to reinforce the dental clinic’s existing branding and introduce art pieces on a modest budget. Collaborating with metal artist Kari Merkle, we designed folded aluminum barnacles and sprinkled them throughout the space, adding fun and intrigue. Inexpensive materials including local Douglas Fir, exposing the existing concrete walls, and powder coated yellow accents provide striking visual elements that will have an impact for years to come.
