"Sometimes you'll notice a subtle reflection of the sky on the tiles, and at other times you'll experience the movement of the clouds passing by - it makes the building feel ethereal. "
An interview with Joel Rutten, lead architect and director at Bernard Tschumi Architects, explains the iconic design for ‘De Passage Den Haag’ - around 10,000 m² of retail space, as well as 118 accommodation suites in a Suite Novotel hotel located in the centre of The Hague, considered the political capital of The Netherlands. Rutten explains how the exterior, finished in Mosa custom-designed ceramic tiles, asserts a strong visual identity but remains true to the concepts of openness and flexibility, which were main design drivers. " The envelope tackles the duality in the design concept: being transient and present at the same time. A mixture of angular and free form geometries give the building a sculptural, executed through square Mosa facade tiles in relation to cloud-like windows that break the angular," says Rutten.
