The apartment is located in an old building, which was a former mill in the surrounding of Mainz, Germany.
The apartment itself has a size of 150 sqm on one level.
The owner, a fashion designer and a priest, asked us for a complete make over, as the apartment was very cluttered and worn out by the former residents.
It was not possible to open the floor plan by removing partial walls, so we had to work with the existing floor plan. As some of the rooms are very tiny, we decided for a serene interior concept, to make the atmosphere of the whole space feel brighter and free.
We removed the old flooring ( tiles and plastic floor ) and replaced them with a high quality herringbone wooden floor in the kitchen, bathroom and entrance hall.
For the bedroom we decided to use a high quality carpet with a soft shimmer, which underlines the luxury of the curtains and sleeping itself.
We used white painted screed flooring with a special shiny varnish for the dining room, living room and office space. With this plain and serene background, spaces appear larger as they are. We decided for less furniture to give every piece its own stage.
The concept of „emptiness“ and „wideness“ is underlined by the soft white curtains, which were also used in the bedroom. They go align with the walls and connote that there is something behind them.
The table and bench in the kitchen and office space is custom made and designed by STUDIO OINK.
The kitchen itself is a custom made and optimized IKEA kitchen.
For the rest we were using a mix of vintage and modern furniture, to make the space a home and not a showroom.
Everything in the bathroom was torn out and we decided for a combination of shower and bathtub in front of the window and a long custom made wash stand, which is also hiding the washing machine.
The colour palette we were using is a pastel and soft one; just the wooden surfaces and natural accessories bring a lightly masculine and grounded appearance to each room.
Many accessories, like vases, candleholders and ceramics were bought at the gallery of STUDIO OINK.
