Designed to integrate into the home environment, the Cupertino has a surface that lifts up to reveal storage compartments, so that all evidence of work can be concealed out of office hours

While a standard package of furniture destined for a residential interior design project might usually consist of a sofa, coffee table, bed, nightstand, light, chest of drawers, dining table, and dining chairs, Michel Baumgart, BoConcept Contract’s man in London, notes that, increasingly, there are newcomers to the list: a desk, desk chair and task light. You’d have to have been marching blindfolded through the last few months to not know why. In pandemic times, the world is working from home.

Meanwhile, trend hunters speak in unison about the changing face of the office and its new role as a centre of community in a remote world. Features are taken from the hospitality and home sectors: bars and kitchens, fireplaces, games rooms, rock walls, spas, gyms, homely furniture, rugs and plants.

Homes masquerade as offices, while offices borrow from homes and hotels. It was happening already but the pandemic has functioned as a catalyst for even faster change. It means that when it comes to dressing interiors, whatever their primary function, the homely Scandinavian qualities that are BoConcept’s founding drive have become key to easing the ‘living’ part of a multifunctioning interior.

‘Our designs perfectly match the work-life merger,’ says Christian Hiller, Contract Director. While BoConcept may not be a larger office supplier, it can furnish a home office more than adequately, satisfying the needs of a work-from-home community and it has the upper hand in offices and studios, where comfortable, relaxed breakout zones are being used to put workers at ease and foster more and better creative thinking. ‘Office workplaces will become more like big meeting and socialising centres with possibilities for more informal sharing of ideas and content.’ he forecasts ‘I am sure that we will increasingly see more tactile and natural materials in public spaces supporting personal well-being, but at the same time offering a feeling of safety and shelter.’ Hygge is BoConcept’s trump card, and one it can play over and over.
