The String shelf system, designed in 1949 by Nils Strinning, represents a milestone in Scandinavian design. STRING has been designed in such a way that it can be put together individually, and therefore adapts to all spatial conditions. With its simple, timeless design language, it still fascinates today.
String® system is a complex shelf system that can be assembled individually according to personal needs. In addition to the shelves made of oak, walnut, ash and metal, wall cabinets with drawers or sliding doors, showcases, worktops, storage shelves and shoe racks as well as storage inserts can be integrated into the shelf.
After the Swedish classic disappeared from the market for several decades, Peter Erlandsson and Pär Josefsson founded String Furniture in 2005 with the aim of reviving and preserving the cultural heritage of Nils Strinning. Ten years later, the company developed a range of ergonomic furniture specifically for the office sector, which makes the workplace a functional, flexible, and at the same time friendly and visually appealing place. The designs for string® works are the work of Swedish designers Anna von Schewen and Björn Dahlström, who based their product development on Nisse Strinning’s minimalist design principle. The core of the series consists of a free-standing shelf and height-adjustable tables in various formats: desks, a meeting table and a 3.60-m-long conference table. Numerous details – including a storage cabinet that can be integrated into the shelf and a multifunctional tabletop panel – round off the range and offer an individual solution for every work area.
With the new string® + product line, also designed by the two designers, the company presents clever accessories for contemporary workplaces, including a magazine holder and a small organizer. Integrated into the side walls or the separate String Grid wire-grid, these offer practical storage space for magazines and utensils of all kinds. An unusual reinterpretation of the original design concerns the material: In addition to the wooden shelves, String now also comes with metal shelves. The design classic is thus ideal for new areas of application, such as the corridor or kitchen. The lacquered and thus extremely low-maintenance metal shelves are available in white, grey and black, with a high or low edge, and as a bevelled version for shoes.
