Check in, get naked: the destination hotel bathroom

Hotel bathrooms have undergone a transformation, from the efficient, hygienic spaces of yesteryear to more luxurious, indulgent spaces today. The rise of Instagram – and the bathroom selfie phenomenon – means these formerly humble, private spaces have become attractions in their own right.

In Haawe Boutique Hotel in the northern Finnish town of Rovaniemi designed by Helsinki-based studio Franz Design, each bathroom – just like each of the hotel's 13 rooms – is different. Each space is inspired by a different aspect of Lapland's arctic landscape – some feature white walls with shard-like decorative reliefs, while others are panelled with dark timber or grey marble. The bathrooms have been designed to take these individual decorative schemes into account, while delivering a high level of comfort throughout the property.

In New York's Equinox Hotel, the designers from Rockwell Group put the emphasis on creating more private spaces into which guests can withdraw after exploring the city. Within the smaller rooms, bathrooms are separated from the main space by sheets of tinted glass, while the suites feature a freestanding bath separated from the main room by a sliding, mirrored door. In both cases, the understated, spa-grade fittings and polished, honey-coloured stone ensure an indulgent experience throughout.

A brighter, more airy atmosphere pervades The Stratford, a new hotel in east London. Its interior, designed by Danish studio Space Copenhagen, is inspired by mid-century glamour and New York's residential hotels. The common spaces as well as the rooms feature floor-to-ceiling windows, grey marble and pastel accents. The bathrooms likewise feature expansive panoramic views of this quickly developing part of the city, while pale marble walls and rounded vanity mirrors provide the right surroundings for capturing those coveted, Instagram-worthy moments.

Conran & Partners' PURO Kraków Kazimierz is a more contemporary, colourful affair. The hotel features an eclectic mix of modern classics, bold contemporary furniture, bright colours and timber accents. This playful ethos makes it into the bathrooms as well. Containing colourful glazed tiles, corrugated glass partitions and black and white terrazzo sinks, the bathrooms become fun, photogenic spaces. The hotel's spa contains all these elements, but unites them with timber panelling for a more relaxed, communal experience.
