ICONIC AWARDS 2019: Innovative Interior

With DESIGN IM KUNSTVEREIN the German Design Council and the ICONIC AWARDS 2019: Innovative Interior present the very best in all areas of interior design. The winning products selected by the jury will be exhibited at the Kölnischer Kunstverein (Cologne Art Society) during imm cologne from 14-20 January 2019, and reflect the interior design trends of the coming season – with relevance for the industry itself as well as for the general public.

In cooperation with the German Design Museum Foundation, guided tours of the exhibition will be offered. Those who want to try their hand at creative design themselves can do so in a mini-workshop: the "10-minute chair" is a creative exercise that focuses on the active exploration of design using limited materials.

The German Design Council demonstrates its comprehensive commitment to young designers with the presentation of the winners of the newcomer competition ein&zwanzig (twenty-one) on the upper floor of the Kölnischer Kunstverein.

At this year's ICONIC AWARDS: Innovative Interior, three trends came to the fore: Genuine, Jewel and Summer Party.

"Genuine": analogue, authentic, tangible
"Genuine" represents the return to and yearning for what is authentic, tangible and handcrafted as a counter-statement to a world of screens and glossy surfaces. However, this yearning is not to be answered with a flight back to the pre-digital era with its analogue restrictions. Rather, the object of desire is a design language that is clearly aesthetically anchored in the 21st century. GENUINE responds to this paradox, and it is no coincidence that a certain ambivalence is associated with numerous "genuine" objects, alternating between the familiar and the innovative. Original materials and citations are combined with new options in processing and innovative materials to create fresh object and spatial worlds.

"Jewel" rings in the new opulence: gold, silver, marble – bold, expressive colours, shapes and patterns, sparkling accessories and shimmering surfaces on dark walls and floor coverings in purple, brown or black. The skilful use of heavy, dense materials and lavish forms together with light counterpoints provides lively contrasts. While the morphology of JEWEL is based primarily on the canon of classic mid-century design, the fabrics are of higher quality, the patterns lusher and the accessories more glittering. This trend lives for targeted use and the fresh combination of the valuable pieces. Particularly the diversity of the metal finishes is made possible with new technologies such as physical vapour deposition (PVD) coating, which unites high-quality surfaces in all metallic colours with robust quality.

"Summer Party" brings nature indoors. Outdoor experiences are an expression of freedom and balance the stylised everyday urban routine. Outdoor kitchens, lounge landscapes in the garden or furniture that can be used both in- and outdoors let you blend the apparent counter worlds outside and inside. Innovative materials such as ultra-rugged textiles or smart coatings make it possible even for sprawling, upholstered lounge sofas to migrate to the fenced-in wilderness without damage.
