When interior palettes were all white and grey, and every neutral nuance in between, the acoustic control of our buildings had nowhere to go except discreetly, without fuss or fanfare, into walls and ceilings. Now that we have exorcised the monotony of minimal and monochrome from our homes and public spaces, and colour, texture, pattern and relief are back, sound absorption is stepping out of the woodwork. Quite literally.

Rockfon’s latest products extend beyond soundproofing to become functioning parts of a building’s interior, whether as screens and artwork (Canva), or internal partitioning in the form of Rockfon Hub (pictured on the right)

The pieces in Rockfon’s new design collection, long in development and now launched under the Sounds Beautiful banner, stand proud of wall and ceiling, and unapologetically introduce colour, texture and shape. Rockfon Canva consists of framed acoustic panels that can be customised in pattern or colour while hung like pictures to break up expanses of wall, or suspended from the ceiling; Rockfon Mono Acoustic are bespoke forms in a chosen colour that can be suspended from the ceilings in sculptural arrangements; Rockfon Lamella is a modular wall system that features textural wooden veneer, which boosts the acoustic properties of the stone wool and Rockfon Hub is a suspended acoustic platform system, which combined with curtaining creates islands of calm in larger public spaces.

Not only is the new collection turning the tide decoratively, it is also expanding the potential functionality and flexibility of sound absorption. Hub responds to the increasing multi-purposing of space by offering the means to mould and partition space to the occupants' needs, and continually refresh and adapt it.

'Our new acoustic solutions are modular, customisable and demountable,' says Christian Klinge, innovation director at Rockfon. 'This gives designers choices in how they introduce acoustic balance into space – from walls to ceilings, from partitions to art panels. And because we allow for reconfiguration, tenants and owners have design flexibility in a world where change is a constant and adaptability is essential.' The offering is made to enhance aesthetics, but in an adaptable and flexible way, and as a result it improves the durability factor. It’s sound absorption that is more than earning its place in the architect’s toolkit.
