The colour of sound: Rockfon

Seeing colour is a physical bodily experience; it triggers our brain’s hypothalamus causing an emotional response. In Amsterdam, a new interactive gallery space is pumping up this experience to new levels, by using colour to help visitors explore the crossroads between art, social media and identity.

The Youseum consists of 25 rooms, each with a unique theme and colour scheme: ‘We have created spaces in which people can take cool photos,’ says Joep Heusschen, co-founder of the space, ‘But Youseum is more than a pretty picture, it also tells a story. The Youseum is all about you. You play the leading role in your own work of art and you are stimulated to take a sharp look at it.’

Multi-sensory interior design in each room seeks to challenge the thoughts, feelings and behaviours of visitors through contrast and surprise. Essential to sculpting each unique atmosphere was Rockfon’s Color-all range of acoustic solutions. Important to the interactive spaces, high sound values could be absorbed, while the wide spectrum of colours allowed designers to be playful and extreme.

Colour has been layered up to create heightened effects. In the nautically-themed room, the Rockfon Color-all in Azure fits the ceilings with a matching suspension system. In other spaces, Rockfon® Universal™ Baffles in Coral and the Rockfon® Eclipse™ islands in Sage bring new shape to interiors.

The TikTok recording studio is where the acoustic and aesthetic properties of Rockfon’s products truly join forces with flair. The Rockfon Color-all range is used in square wall and ceiling tiles in four contrasting shades, creating a dynamic Gen-Z fantasy setting designed to enhance videos through both sound and colour.

‘Rockfon helped to add a deeper layer to the experience for visitors within the different areas of the Youseum. The perception of colour in these rooms is enhanced by the acoustic perception,’ says Heusschen, ‘But you only experience that when you have been there yourself!’
