Materials Council has been busy. Founded in partnership with Architonic in 2012, the leading London-based consultancy has proved in a mere nine months its expertise and relevance to architects, manufacturers and business, providing indispensable consulting in the application of environmentally responsible and cost-effective materials. High-profile clients, such as Abstracta, Clayworks, Glock and Architonic, have all recognised the competitive edge Materials Council's specialist knowledge can bring. Here's a report from Materials Council on their latest activities.

If anyone knows that we’re living in a material world, it’s Materials Council, the London-based consultancy, which, partnered with Architonic, was founded last autumn by ex-Foster & Partners materials researchers Ian Hunter and Brad Turner. In the a mere nine months, the duo have made their mark on architecture and design scenes, delivering their materials expertise to creatives and manufacturers in the form of consulting, exhibitions, talks and journalism.
Here’s an update from Materials Council themselves on their recent activities and some information on their next exhibition.

Materials Council at Clerkenwell Design Week 2013
.......................................................................................
Materials Council were selected as specialist partners of Clerkenwell Design Week 2013. For the duration of the show, we relocated the Materials Council studio to the new surfaces & materials pavilion Covered @Charterhouse Square, offering drop-in ‘Council Meetings’ for architects and designers to come down and get free materials advice on their current projects.
We also displayed a selection of materials from our 'Whiter than White' exhibition, Materials Council’s inaugural exhibition, which we launched with last September.
Media partners Architonic were on hand to give out over 1,000 fabric bags to lucky visitors, proving to be one of the most popular items at the entire festival!

'In the Scale of Carbon' at the London Design Festival 2013
.............................................................................................
We've just announced our next major exhibition, debuting at Super Brands London, during the London Design Festival 2013. 19–22 September, Old Truman Brewery.
As a measure of sustainability, buildings, materials and processes are commonly judged by the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) they produce. But by its nature quantities of this colourless gas remain frustratingly intangible.
'In the Scale of Carbon' aims to bring carbon-dioxide emissions out of the abstract by physically representing the quantity of architectural materials produced for one tonne of CO2 emissions.
The concept has been developed by Materials Council, using data verified by Dr Craig Jones, the leading authority on embodied carbon, and designed in collaboration with London-based Raw Architecture Workshop.

Ege carpets production tour
.............................................
Materials Council visited the central Herning factory of Danish carpet brand Ege, one of Europe’s largest carpet manufacturers, to see first-hand the advanced technology employed in the production of their carpets.
Founded in 1938, Ege design, develop and manufacture high-quality pure wool and blended wool and polyamide (nylon) carpets, primarily for the contract market. Annually, they produce around 5 million square metres of carpet.
