The lightweight LessThanFive™ Collection gets bigger – but not heavier

The LessThanFive™ guest chair from the Coalesse Design Group and Michael Young launched in 2017. The handmade, lightweight and exceptionally strong carbon fibre chair weighing less than 2.3kg (5 pounds) was a perfect addition to the market during a time when workplaces were becoming more agile than ever before. This year has seen the launch of the LessThanFive™ stool and lounge chair (both weighing less than 2.2kg) bringing more lightweight options to the workplace for added versatility. 

The LessThanFive™ Collection now embraces all types of on-the-fly transitions in the workplace: stack four chairs and carry them across the room with ease in seconds; slide a stool from desk to kitchen counter; or smoothly reposition the comfortable lounge chair closer to a social gathering.

With an interest in minimal aesthetics and technical innovation, Michael Young, the Hong Kong-based British designer, originally began using carbon fibre in the design of bikes and luggage. The material made sense for the workplace environment with its ability to be easily moulded into ergonomic positions with no excess structure or weight.

'We were really focused on achieving maximum comfort with minimal materials,' he says of the LT5 Collection. 'The goal was to strip away as much material as possible and avoid over-designing. The aesthetic of the products is embedded in its functionality and performance. Plus, important for sustainability, a carbon fibre chair has a very long lifecycle, eliminating the need to buy more products and use up more materials.'
