I’ve never been a fan of the term ‘decorative lighting’. It’s always sounded a bit superficial, a bit frilly, to my ears. I much prefer sculptural lighting, the idea that considered form and materiality can result in lighting pieces that work as hard when they’re switched off as they do when they’re on. Italian brand Cassina is a prime example of such consideration. With an enviable roster of design collaborators, its recent launches include two wonderfully expressive and historically significant Eames designs made available for the first time, and an almost-poetic lighting system by Shanghai-based architects Neri & Hu that's reminiscent of paper kites. This is the stuff of culture.
